The release of MAMA DRAMA represents a step up in the world for No Limit Records. Gradually increasing production values find DJ KLC and the Beats By The Pound production crew filling out their tracks with more complex arrangements and slickly multi-tracked vocals. Mia X's rhymes display a corresponding increase in lyrical complexity, although fans of the label's previous efforts shouldn't be discouraged; "The Colonel" is not about to abandon the formula for success which got him where he is today, namely: blatant disregard for censors in the rendition of graphic sex-and-violence narratives and a preference for shouted profanity over tricky metaphors.

Included in the general process of gentrification are guest vocals by Loud recording artist Fat Joe on "What's The Point" (along with guest spots by No Limit labelmates too numerous to mention) and Mia's attempt to write herself into a larger tradition of female rhymers with "Mama's Tribute," which explicitly references MC Lyte's classic "Paper Thin."
